I completed my doula training 3 months after giving birth to my first child as a way to process my own birth experience and find a way to support other families during pregnancy, birth, postpartum, and early parenthood.
Although my first birth did not go as I hoped, I am grateful for my unique experience. I was well-informed, chose an in-hospital birth center, and was determined to have a low-intervention waterbirth surrounded by my partner, midwives, and close family members. Instead, I ended up being transferred to the hospital after a long second stage and delivered my beautiful little boy under bright lights, with vacuum assistance, an episiotomy, and a room full of strangers.
My birth experience helped me realize the importance of having informed advocates in the room with you. I knew what I needed, but could not find the words to advocate for myself in the middle of labor.
My mission is to make sure every birthing person and family have access to evidence-based information and the skills needed to build a supportive birth team. Your only concern during birth should be to focus on bringing your baby earthside with power, dignity, and joy!
